The Pilgrimage on Horseback, which connects the towns of Moita and Viana do Alentejo, is a centuries-old tradition shared by the two counties and one of the largest equestrian events in the country.
At that time, Moita’s farmers moved to the Nossa Senhora D’Aires Sanctuary with their animals, making the journey through the old Canada Real, through farms and dirt roads, to be blessed and to pray for abundant crops.
For four days, hundreds of pilgrims travel around 150 kilometers across the fields, behind the carriage carrying the image of N.a. Sr.a. da Boa Viagem, patron of Moita, which joins, on arrival in Viana do Alentejo, the image of N.a. Sr.a. D’Aires.
Pilgrimage has always been a religious event, but now it has a more playful side that emphasizes the camaraderie among the people who take part. This event combines religion with a special atmosphere and camaraderie.
