The toponym “Alvares” is said to stem from the ancient term “alvar,” which means “oak tree,” suggesting an area rich in oaks. The village’s roots are old and cloaked in mystery, and its founding date has been lost to history.
Throughout the years, Alvares prospered under the patronage of early Portuguese rulers, acquiring privileges and charters that raised its standing. It was once the headquarters of a municipality until it was incorporated into the municipality of Góis in 1855.
Alvares has seen several administrative changes, including relocations to other districts and provinces. Despite these developments, it remained a rural community tucked between hills and pine trees.
The Sinhel River, which originates in the Serra da Lousã, runs through Alvares, offering both sustenance and entertainment to its residents. The installation of a removable dam increased the area’s charm by producing a natural pool for people to enjoy.
Many historical sites can be found throughout the area, including a stone bridge, a parish church devoted to São Mateus, the historic Paços do Concelho structure (the municipal hall), and a Pelourinho, or justice-handling pillory.
Chapels, such as the Chapel of São Sebastião, and cemeteries, like the one erected in 1904, serve as memories of Alvares’ rich cultural and religious legacy, representing the passage of time and communal resilience
Our Lady of the Assumption Church (“Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção”) is located in the village center. The church was originally built in the 13th century as a private chapel but was renovated in 1518 as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
The church is designed in the traditional Manueline and Rococo styles popular in 16th-century Portugal. The interior of the church is beautifully rendered in this manner, making it a very magnificent monument in Alte. The church is one of Alte’s earliest historical references; it is well worth a visit!
