Escovaria de Belomonte is a broom store, a workshop, and a museum all rolled into one. When you go through the door, you’ll see the brightly coloured brooms hanging from the ceiling. The factory where handmade brooms are manufactured can be seen within the store: using a needle that wovens small amounts of natural bristles through holes in wood and metal constructions. The bristle comes from goats, boars, horsehair and tail, pigs, and a special type of fibre derived from a Mexican cactus. The latter is mostly used to make brushes for cleaning dishes and polishing furniture.

History of the Store
Escovaria de Belomonte is a family-owned broom company founded in 1927 by António Silva, the current owner’s grandfather. It began in Massarelos and was relocated to Rua de Belomonte 13 years later, where it remains open.

Closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Address: Rua do Belomonte 36, 4050-097 Porto
