Madeira, a Portuguese autonomous area, is an archipelago consisting of four islands off the northwest coast of Africa that is part of the European Union. In addition to its eponymous wine and warm, subtropical temperature, it is well-known for its arid landscape. The main island of Madeira is volcanic, green, and rocky, with steep cliffs, pebbly beaches, and villages on the Faj River’s deltas. The island is home to a variety of wildlife. The capital, Funchal, is home to botanic gardens and is well-known for its port and a spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display.
