Salema is a village located near Vila do Bispo in the Algarve, Portugal. Historically it was a fishing village, but it is now a popular tourist destination.

Salema name meaning “safe”.

The little village of Salema is located just a few minutes off the N125, which travels through the Algarve. Despite the fact that the mountains around the town are filled with vacation houses and lodging, Salema retains its traditional fishing hamlet at its centre. The boat launch is central to the beach, where you’ll typically see fishermen tending to their boats or nets. Cafés, pubs, and cosy eateries may be found along the narrow streets.

Salema features a population of people that appear to live their traditional routines in tandem with the contemporary world, oblivious to the visitors who are simply another and necessary slice of the local economy.

Picture cobblestone alleyways and tiny blue-trimmed whitewashed fishermen’s houses peppered with chimney pots. We are glad that Salema has remained true to itself by keeping its past traditions. A colourful fleet of wooden boats catches sea bass, bream, octopus, sardines, and mackerel. Every morning, you can still see fisherman unloading their catch before repairing their nets and relaxing after a night at sea.
